Compassion in Lifes Final Chapters
My name is Courtney Megan, and I am the Founder and End-of-Life Companion Coordinator of Companion Farewell Services LLC.
For twenty years, I worked in residential property management, including communities serving seniors and older adults. Throughout my career, I witnessed firsthand the challenges families face when a loved one becomes seriously ill, enters hospice care, passes away, or leaves behind beloved pets who suddenly find themselves without the person they have known and loved their entire lives.
Again and again, I saw the same heartbreaking reality.
Families were trying to make difficult decisions while navigating grief, logistics, paperwork, and uncertainty. In the middle of it all were loyal pets waiting at the door, searching for their owner, confused by sudden changes, and often forgotten in conversations about end-of-life planning.
Those experiences stayed with me.
A Lifetime Around Animals
My connection to animals began long before my professional career.
I grew up around animals and spent time on a ranch where caring for them was simply a part of daily life. Animals were never viewed as possessions, they were companions, workers, protectors, and family members.
That belief followed me into adulthood and eventually led me to volunteer with animal shelters and rescue efforts. Through that work, I saw another side of loss: pets surrendered after a death, animals left without a plan, and families struggling to determine what should happen next.
It became impossible to ignore the bond between people and the animals who love them.
Growing up Around End-of-life Care
My understanding of death, grief, and the importance of meaningful goodbyes began at an early age.
I was fortunate to grow up around a mortician and funeral home environment, where I learned that death is not simply an event—it is a transition that affects entire families.
I witnessed the importance of compassion, dignity, respect, and presence during some of life’s most difficult moments. I learned that families often remember the smallest acts of kindness long after everything else has faded.
Those lessons became the foundation of how I approach my work today.
Why Companion farewell Was Created
Companion Farewell Services was born from a simple realization:
People prepare for what happens to everything except the relationships that matter most.
When someone is nearing the end of life, enters hospice, moves into memory care, is hospitalized, or passes away, one question is often overlooked:
What about the pet?
For many individuals, their pet is not just an animal.
They are a best friend.
A source of comfort.
A daily companion.
A reason to keep going.
Yet circumstances often prevent one final visit, one last reunion, or one meaningful goodbye.
That is the gap Companion Farewell Services was created to fill.

At Companion Farewell Services, we help facilitate meaningful connections during life’s final transitions.

- Human end-of-life companion and death doula services
- Pet end-of-life support
- Companion Farewell Visits
- Hospice, hospital, assisted living, and memory care pet visits (where permitted)

- Pet rehoming support

My goal is simple:
To walk alongside families during difficult transitions, help create opportunities for connection and closure, and ensure that no pet or person is forgotten during life’s final chapter.
Because sometimes the most meaningful gift we can offer is simply helping two hearts find their way back to each other one last time.
